Abstract
Agriculture is fundamental to global food security, rural livelihoods, and economic development, yet agricultural systems are increasingly exposed to climate-related challenges. Rising temperatures, irregular precipitation, prolonged droughts, flooding, soil degradation, and changing pest and disease patterns can reduce agricultural productivity and threaten the stability of food systems. Climate-smart agriculture (CSA) has emerged as an integrated approach for improving agricultural productivity and resilience while reducing environmental impacts and, where possible, contributing to greenhouse-gas mitigation. This review examines major climate-smart agricultural strategies, including conservation agriculture, integrated nutrient management, efficient irrigation, crop diversification, agro forestry, precision agriculture, improved crop varieties, integrated pest management, and improved soil-health management. The paper also discusses the relationship between sustainable agricultural practices and environmental conservation. Particular attention is given to the importance of soil organic matter, water-use efficiency, biodiversity, and technological innovation in developing resilient agricultural systems. Although climate-smart practices can provide substantial environmental and economic benefits, their adoption may be limited by financial constraints, inadequate technical knowledge, limited access to technology, fragmented land holdings, and insufficient institutional support. Strengthening agricultural extension services, improving access to climate information, encouraging farmer participation, and developing supportive policies can accelerate the transition toward resilient farming systems. Climate-smart agriculture therefore represents an important pathway for achieving productive, environmentally responsible, and climate-resilient agricultural development.
