Abstract
Water is one of the most important resources required for agricultural production, yet increasing demand, climate variability, population growth, and competition among different sectors are placing growing pressure on freshwater resources. Agriculture is a major user of freshwater, making efficient irrigation and water-management practices essential for sustainable food production. Conventional irrigation systems can result in substantial water losses through evaporation, runoff, and inefficient application. Sustainable water management aims to improve water-use efficiency while maintaining crop productivity and protecting soil and aquatic ecosystems. This review examines major approaches to agricultural water conservation, including drip irrigation, sprinkler irrigation, deficit irrigation, rainwater harvesting, mulching, soil-moisture monitoring, crop diversification, conservation agriculture, and precision irrigation. The paper also discusses the importance of soil health and appropriate crop selection in reducing agricultural water demand. Modern technologies such as sensors, remote sensing, automated irrigation systems, and digital decision-support tools can further improve irrigation efficiency. However, adoption may be limited by initial investment costs, technical requirements, inadequate infrastructure, and limited farmer awareness. Effective agricultural water conservation therefore requires a combination of appropriate technologies, farmer education, institutional support, and locally adapted management practices. Sustainable water management can contribute to improved agricultural resilience, reduced resource pressure, and long-term food security.
